In the early years, children see new possibilities everywhere. Their curious nature makes them notice, touch, and taste everything around them – challenging caregivers to stay more than a few steps ahead.  At the St John Neumann School for Children and Families, your child’s curiosity excites us!  We have created a safe and engaging environment to satisfy the most inquisitive explorers.

Our educational philosophy was inspired by Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, and Montessori methods and it closely aligns with a 21st Century theory known as the The Curiosity Approach.  Safety is paramount at the St John Neumann School for Children and Families, but we will also encourage exploration and healthy-risk taking. For example:

  • Crawlers, climbers and jumpers will move all they want in their classroom loft or nursery gym and our indoor play spaces.
  • All children will play with age-appropriate items like pottery, seashells, and paper tubes which invite open-ended learning and inspire a gentle touch.
  • And preschool chefs will chop, mix, and cook foods safely in their classrooms.

The interests of the children will inspire much of what they learn. You might wonder how we manage to stay ahead of children in our planning while also following their lead.  Our highly-skilled teachers will practice many forms of learner engagement, but they will always observe what sparks a child’s curiosity and let them shape their own learning.
